Check CUPS error log. I have no idea why that package was left out of Mint. All but 1 that I have installed in last few years were auto-detected under Ubuntu, Mint Cinnamon and Fedora Even the wifi versions work well. Brother's website should have PPD file download available, though, I haven't found a Brother that Linux did not support, yet.
